Colons and Semi COlons
The colon and semi colon are marks of punctuation that are used to join two thoughts or introduce a list without ending the sentence, or using a conjunction word.
Semi colons-The practice of using the semicolon to separate words of opposed meaning and to indicate interdependent statements. Semicolons should join only those independent clauses that are closely related in meaning.
IE- Call me tomorrow. I'll give you my answer then. VS Call me tomorrow; I will give you my answer then.
I have paid my dues. I expect all the privileges listed in the contract. VS I have paid my dues; therefore, I expect all the privileges listed in the contract.
Colons- The most common use of the colon is to inform the reader that what follows the colon proves, explains, or lists elements of what preceded it.
IE- Instead of " You need things. Bring sleeping bags, pans and warm clothing," try...
"You may be required to bring many items: sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing."
